In order to legally and safely practice in the state of Massachusetts, a new PMU practitioner is required to fully complete a 100-hour course that is accredited by either the SPCP or AAM. Furthermore, after completing the course some towns may require an apprenticeship. All regulations will vary from town to town, therefore, so will the apprenticeship requirements. Most towns, however, will require a 200-hour apprenticeship under the absolute supervision of a Massachusetts licensed Body Art professional. This apprenticeship needs to include at least 30-hours of observing procedures, and 170-hours of supervised procedure on clients. MAB offers both observational hours as well as supervised procedures to its students. Please do your research regarding the town you wish to operate and their regulations.
Licensing regulations vary significantly from state to state and from town to town. Some states require you to be a licensed tattoo artist. Regulations can be quite strict in some states, while others hardly regulate permanent makeup at all since it is such a new concept.
In order to obtain a license, you must be approved by a licensing board. The license confirms that you have met all the legal state requirements.
The most important document you will need to enclose is the certificate of completion of a 100-hour course at a licensed school. Most states then require you to have proof of an apprenticeship (varies from town to town, make sure to do your research).
Depending on where you do your licensing, you may need to take a state board exam. The type of examination varies. Sometimes, an extensive portfolio is enough.
By choosing Massachusetts Academy of Beautiology’s PMU Basic Fundamental Course you are one step further to your goal of becoming a profession PMU artist.
